Serving on Skid Row and Climbing in Joshua Tree
The Missions-In-Action department at Olivet Nazarene University already had a flourishing program for students during their spring break. Their programs led students to countries such as Haiti and Honduras. What the Director of Student Missions got excited about was a proposal for an all-male trip to serve on the streets of Skid Row in inner-city Los Angeles and experience the adventure of nearby Joshua Tree National Park. A year later, 13 men met Summit Adventure at LAX ready to spend nine days learning, serving, climbing and reflecting on the powerful experiences they would have. The combination of serving in the intense inner-city landscape of downtown Los Angeles with climbing in the austere landscape of Joshua Tree National Park provided a truly transformational experience for these men.
This experience exceeded my expectations on multiple levels.
